Carousel, Story and Feed: Matching Format to Placement

How each social placement changes what a video has to do, and why one asset pushed everywhere underperforms in all of them.

Social platforms present video in several distinct placements, and the differences between them are behavioural rather than merely dimensional. A feed video, a story, a carousel and a full screen short form clip reach viewers in different states of attention and intent, and an asset that ignores those differences performs poorly in most of them regardless of how well it was made.

Feed video is viewed while scrolling, at partial attention, usually silently, with the video occupying part of the screen alongside other content. Its job is to interrupt. That means the opening frame must be arresting, the message must be legible without sound, and the composition must survive being small. Length should be short, because the viewer has not committed anything.

Story placement is full screen and sequential, which changes the psychology considerably. The viewer has chosen to move through a sequence and is tapping through at pace. Attention is higher than in a feed and patience is lower: a story segment that does not deliver within a couple of seconds gets tapped past. Content works best when built as a series of discrete beats rather than as a continuous film.

Full screen short form placements are different again. The viewer is in a dedicated consumption mode, sound is more often on, and the platform will keep serving content indefinitely. Retention over the whole clip matters more here than the first frame alone, because the algorithm is reading completion. Dong et al. (2026), examining what drives engagement toward short form videos, found that engagement drivers vary by brand type, which cautions against assuming a single formula transfers across categories.

Carousels are frequently overlooked and are unusually effective for considered purchases. They let a viewer move at their own pace through a sequence of frames, which suits feature explanation, comparison and step by step material better than video does. The first card carries the same burden as a thumbnail, and the sequence should be designed so that stopping at any card still leaves the viewer with something.

The evidence that placement affects outcome independently of creative is direct. Frade et al. (2023) found that in stream ad format and placement materially affect visual attention and effectiveness, and Davtyan et al. (2025) documented differences between skippable ads, non skippable ads and brand placements. These are not marginal effects, and they mean that judging a creative without controlling for placement produces a conclusion about the wrong variable.

Yin et al. (2023) add a further consideration: skippable advertising influences advertising avoidance intention. A mismatched asset in a placement that allows escape does not simply underperform, it can generate avoidance that carries over to the brand. This is the strongest argument against the common practice of buying a placement because it is cheap and filling it with whatever asset exists.

The production implication is that placements should be chosen before the storyboard rather than after the edit. If the campaign will run in feed and full screen short form, the film is composed for vertical natively with a feed crop planned, not cropped afterwards. If a carousel is part of the plan, the frames are designed as frames rather than extracted from footage. These decisions cost nothing at storyboard stage and are expensive later.

Kim et al. (2025), studying playback interactions and engagement in mobile video viewing, found that behaviour during playback carries information that aggregate view counts obscure. Read per placement rather than in aggregate, that behaviour tells you which placement suits which asset, which is knowledge that compounds across campaigns and is lost entirely when results are reported as a single blended number.

The practical approach for a brand with a limited budget is to choose two placements and build for them properly rather than five and build for none. A well constructed vertical asset for full screen placement and a well constructed feed asset from the same production covers most of the available reach, costs little more than one, and avoids the familiar outcome where a single horizontal film is cropped four ways and disappoints in all of them.
