CGI Product Films When No Physical Sample Exists

How to produce a convincing product film before the product physically exists, what source material makes it possible, and where the accuracy risks sit.

A large share of product marketing has to begin before the product exists in a photographable state. Tooling is not finished, packaging is not printed, the sample is a grey prototype with visible seams, or the unit is a single engineering build that cannot leave the factory. The launch date, meanwhile, does not move. CGI exists in this gap, and for many manufacturers it is the only way the campaign happens at all.

The work depends entirely on source material, and the quality ceiling is set on the first day. The essential inputs are the CAD geometry, ideally as a STEP file with assembly structure intact, the material and finish specification, the packaging artwork as vector files, the brand guidelines, and dimensioned drawings. What is optional but transformative is a set of reference photographs of anything physically similar the company already makes, because those photographs show how the real finishes behave under light in a way no specification document conveys.

Production CAD is never render ready and the first stage is always preparation. Engineering models contain internal components that will never be seen, thousands of fasteners that add cost without adding image, and geometry built for manufacturing tolerance rather than for visual smoothness. The studio removes what is invisible, rebuilds what reads badly, and preserves every silhouette and surface transition the viewer will actually perceive. Done carelessly this stage produces a model that renders quickly and looks like a video game asset.

Materials are where a CGI product film is won or lost. The difference between a convincing render and an obviously synthetic one is almost never the geometry, it is the way light behaves on the surfaces: the slight unevenness of powder coating, the directional grain of brushed aluminium, the way injection moulded plastic scatters light near an edge, the microscopic imperfection on any real object. Perfect surfaces read as fake. Controlled imperfection is what makes an object look manufactured rather than modelled.

The commercial argument for this approach has empirical support. Poushneh (2021) found that perceived proximity to a virtual product influenced purchase intention, which is the mechanism by which a well built CGI film does real selling work rather than serving as a placeholder until real photography exists. Johnson Jorgensen and Sorensen (2026) similarly documented how dimensional and interactive presentation shapes retail perceptions. In both cases the finding is that a credible virtual representation is not a substitute for the object, it is a functioning representation of it.

Accuracy carries legal and commercial risk that a marketing team should own explicitly. A render is a claim about what the product will look like, and if the delivered product differs in colour, finish, proportion or configuration, the film becomes a problem in a dispute. The safeguards are straightforward: render only the configuration that will actually be sold, have an engineer with authority review the grey model before rendering time is spent, and hold the final approval against the specification document rather than against someone's memory of it.

Colour is the most frequent accuracy failure and the least anticipated. A brand colour defined as a Pantone reference does not map cleanly to a rendered surface under a specific lighting setup, and the same value can appear noticeably different against different backgrounds. The reliable approach is to render a calibration frame early, compare it against a physical sample or a printed swatch where one exists, and lock the material once approved rather than adjusting it per shot.

The shot list for a product that does not exist should still be built as though a camera were involved, because that discipline produces better films. Establishing wide, three quarter hero, detail passes on the features that differentiate, a functional sequence showing the product doing its job, a scale reference shot with a human or an environment, and a final brand frame. Building the list this way prevents the common CGI failure of a film composed entirely of slow rotating beauty shots that show the object from every angle and explain nothing.

Timeline expectations need to be realistic because rendering does not compress. A sixty second CGI product film typically runs six to eight weeks: one week of CAD preparation, one of storyboard and shot design, two of animation and engineering review, two of look development and rendering, one of edit, sound and revision. Clients under launch pressure often ask to shorten this, and the only stage that genuinely can be shortened is the number of distinct environments, not the review cycles or the render time.

The lasting value of this work is usually underestimated at commissioning. Once a product exists as an accurate, well finished 3D asset, it can be re-rendered for the next campaign, dropped into new environments, cut into vertical formats, exploded for a technical film, turned into high resolution stills for brochures and tender documents, and reused for years. The film is the immediate deliverable. The asset is the thing that keeps paying.
