Exhibition Booth Loop Videos That Stop Foot Traffic

What a booth screen has to do in two seconds, why most exhibition video is unwatchable, and how to design a loop for a noisy hall.

An exhibition hall is the most hostile environment a video will ever play in. It is loud, brightly lit, visually chaotic, and the audience is walking past at pace while being approached by staff from every stand. A booth video has perhaps two seconds to make someone slow down, and almost every property of a good brand film works against it here.

The most common mistake is running the corporate film on the booth screen. A three minute narrative piece with a voiceover, designed to be watched from beginning to end by someone who chose to, plays to nobody in a hall. It has no entry point: a passer by arriving at minute two sees a fragment that means nothing, and the audio is inaudible over the room.

What works is a loop built as a series of complete statements rather than a continuous film. Each segment of ten to fifteen seconds makes one point, legibly, silently, and resolves. A visitor arriving at any moment gets a whole idea rather than a fragment, which is the structural property that a narrative film cannot have.

Silence is absolute in practice, so the message must be visual. Text should be large, brief and high contrast, sized for reading at three to five metres rather than at desk distance. The product or the process should be shown doing something rather than sitting still, because motion is what registers peripherally when someone is not looking directly at the screen.

Brightness is a technical constraint that ruins many booth videos. Exhibition halls are lit brightly and often from above, and screens compete with that. Content graded dark, with subtle contrast and detail in the shadows, disappears entirely. Wang et al. (2022), reviewing image quality measurement for large screen displays, emphasise assessing quality from realistic viewing conditions, and a bright hall is the relevant condition. Designs with bright fields and strong tonal separation survive.

Viewing angle matters because visitors approach from the side rather than face on. Content composed for a centred viewer loses its edges to most of the traffic. Keeping the essential message within the central portion, and avoiding fine detail near the frame edges, keeps it legible to someone walking past at an angle, which is nearly everyone.

The practical version for a booth is to watch the stand for an hour: where people slow, what they look at, how far away they are when they decide whether to engage. That observation changes the design more than any amount of studio discussion.

The loop should be built for the stand's actual role rather than as a general brand asset. A stand whose purpose is lead generation needs content that qualifies: naming the sector, the problem and the product category clearly enough that the wrong visitors keep walking and the right ones stop. A stand whose purpose is to support existing customers needs different content again. Sarasvuo et al. The technical delivery is the same discipline as any event content and is often handled worse because a booth feels informal. The screen has a native resolution and an aspect ratio that may be unusual. The playback device has codec preferences. The loop must wrap seamlessly, because a visible jump every ninety seconds is noticed by the staff standing beside it all day even if visitors miss it. Sending a test file to whoever is loading the screen, days ahead, remains the single most effective safeguard.

The content set that serves a stand well is usually three pieces rather than one: a short attract loop for the main screen, a longer explanatory piece for a second screen or a tablet used in conversation, and a silent demonstration that a staff member can point at while talking. Producing these together from one visual system costs little more than the loop alone and covers the three situations that actually occur on a stand.
