Final Mastering Checks Before Client Delivery
The technical checks that belong between picture lock and handover, in the order that catches the most problems soonest.
The gap between a film being finished and a film being delivered is where a specific class of error occurs: technically correct work rendered into files that are wrong for their destination. These errors are invisible during the edit and obvious to the recipient, and a fixed checklist catches nearly all of them in under an hour.
Start with the master itself. Confirm it is encoded in a mastering codec rather than a delivery codec, at the project's native resolution and frame rate, with full quality audio. Every other deliverable is derived from this file, so an error here propagates to all of them. Re-encoding a compressed file for another destination compounds the compression, which is the most common and most avoidable quality loss in delivery.
Check the frame rate has not been converted anywhere in the chain. A film edited at one rate and exported at another is interpolated or duplicated, and the resulting judder is far more visible on a large screen than in a preview window. Confirming the export matches the timeline, and that the timeline matches the destination's expectation, takes seconds.
Check the colour space and its tagging. A film graded in one space and exported without correct tags will be interpreted differently by different players, producing the familiar situation where the film looks correct in the editing application and washed out in a browser. This is a metadata problem rather than a grading problem and it is fixed at export.
Check audio levels against the destination's loudness target rather than by ear. Platforms normalise, so a mix mastered as loud as possible is turned down and left sounding compressed, while a mix built for a quiet room is inaudible in a ballroom. Zhang et al. (2025) found that audiovisual features of short video advertising contribute measurably to consumer engagement behaviours, and a version too quiet to follow is not being engaged with regardless of its content.
Check for clipping and for silence at the head and tail. Clipping is audible distortion that cannot be repaired after export. Unintended silence or a truncated final beat at the end of a file is the kind of error that survives every review because nobody watches past the last frame of picture.
Check every on screen string against a source document rather than against the script. Names, titles, figures, claims, legal lines and the call to action. This is where the most embarrassing errors live, and the check should be done by someone who did not build the graphics, because the person who typed it will read what they intended.
Check each deliverable in its actual destination rather than in a player. The social cut on a phone, silent, in daylight. The event version on a large screen at show brightness. Wang et al. (2022), reviewing image quality measurement for large screen displays including LED, emphasise assessing quality from realistic audience viewing conditions, and each destination reveals a different class of problem that no studio monitor will show.
Check subtitles and captions by watching rather than by proofreading the file. Lines that are too fast, breaks that fall mid phrase, text sitting behind platform interface elements, and drift out of sync are all visible only in playback. Zheng et al. (2022) found that adding subtitles to audio visual material assists comprehension, which is only true when they are readable at the pace they appear.
Finally, check the delivery package itself: every version on the agreed list, named consistently, in the right formats, with the textless master and stems included, the licence documents attached, and a short readme naming what is what. A delivery that is technically perfect and missing three of the twenty agreed versions will be experienced by the client as an incomplete project, which is the only version of quality that matters at handover.
