Headset or Browser: Where Immersive Content Is Actually Viewed
Which delivery route a project should design for, what changes between them, and why most immersive content is never seen in a headset.
Immersive projects are frequently designed for a headset and consumed in a browser. The client imagines a visitor putting on a device; in practice the overwhelming majority of views come from someone dragging a panorama around on a phone or a laptop. Designing for the route the audience actually uses is the decision that most determines whether the project is worth its cost.
The browser route is where reach lives. A tour or a 360 film embedded on a website can be opened by anyone, immediately, with no equipment and no instruction. The experience is less immersive, the viewer sees a window into the sphere rather than being inside it, and that window is what nearly everyone will experience.
The headset route is where the experience lives, and it is bounded by access. It requires the device, someone to set it up, and a physical situation in which putting on a headset is appropriate. That describes an exhibition stand, a sales gallery, a training room and a showroom, which are exactly the contexts where headset delivery is genuinely worth building for, because the visitor is present and the equipment can be managed.
The design differences between them are substantial rather than cosmetic. In a headset, camera height must be correct or the viewer feels wrongly scaled, movement must be minimal or it causes discomfort, and text must be placed at a comfortable focal distance. In a browser, the viewer controls a small window, so subjects must be findable, text can be overlaid conventionally, and the initial view matters enormously because many visitors never move it.
The initial view is the browser equivalent of a thumbnail and is routinely left to chance. Whichever direction the camera happened to face becomes what a visitor sees, which is often a wall. Setting the default heading deliberately for every position, so the visitor lands looking at what matters, is a small piece of work with a large effect on whether the tour is explored.
The viewer experience research suggests that construction rather than technology determines how these land. Yu and Lo (2023), in a systematic review mapping viewer experience in cinematic virtual reality, and Carpio et al. (2023), evaluating viewer experience of interactive virtual reality movies, both point toward design decisions as the determinants. Steinfeld (2025), studying a 360 degree immersive experience, illustrates that these formats can carry substantive content when built for it.
Performance is the browser constraint that decides whether the content is seen at all. A tour that takes twenty seconds to load its first panorama on a mobile connection has lost a share of its audience before appearing. Progressive loading, sensible resolution tiers and a fast first view matter more than maximum quality at full zoom, and this is a build decision rather than a capture one.
For events and exhibitions the practical answer is usually both, with the headset as the attraction and the browser as the takeaway. A visitor experiences it properly on the stand and receives a link that works on their phone afterwards, which is also what they will forward to a colleague. Building only the headset version leaves the stand with nothing to send.
Laing and Apperley (2020), examining the relevance of virtual reality to communication design, treat the medium as a design problem rather than a delivery format, which is the right frame for this decision. The question is not which technology is more impressive but which situation the audience will be in when they encounter the content.
The practical instruction at brief stage is to name the primary route and design for it, then derive the secondary. If the content will mostly be opened from a website, build for the browser and treat headset support as a bonus. If it exists to be experienced on a stand, build for the headset and produce a browser version deliberately rather than as a fallback. Projects that refuse to choose produce an experience that is compromised in both.
