How Long Does an AI Video Take to Produce From Brief to Delivery
A realistic timeline for an AI video project, stage by stage, and an honest account of which stages compress and which do not.
The most common misconception about AI video is that it is instant. The generation of an individual shot is fast, and that speed is real, but a shot is not a film. The stages that surround generation, briefing, scripting, visual development, review, editing, sound and delivery, are unchanged, and for most projects they account for the majority of the calendar time. Knowing where the time actually goes lets a client compress the right things.
A realistic total for a sixty second commercial film is three to four weeks from a locked brief to final delivery. That figure assumes prompt client responses, which is the largest single variable. The same project with a slow approval chain takes six to eight weeks, and the additional time is entirely waiting rather than working. Studios who quote two weeks are usually quoting their own working time and not the client's review time.
The first three to five days go to brief and script. This is where the audience, the message, the runtime and the mandatory elements are settled, and it is the stage that most rewards being unhurried. A script approved on day four with genuine agreement about what the film says is worth more than a script approved on day two that gets reopened in week three. The failure mode here is the unnamed approver, discovered one at a time after work has begun.
The next three to five days go to visual development: the still frame exploration that establishes the world, the light, the palette and the treatment of the subject. Three or four genuinely distinct directions are presented, one is chosen, and it is expanded into the specific frames the film requires. This stage feels like it is delaying the video and is in fact the stage that prevents the expensive revisions later. A project that skips it recovers the time and then loses twice as much.
Storyboarding takes a further two to three days and converts the approved frames into a shot by shot plan with durations. For generative work this document is more important than in conventional production, because it defines exactly which shots need to be generated and therefore what the generation effort actually is. Without it, generation becomes exploratory, and exploratory generation has no natural end point.
Generation itself typically occupies five to eight working days for a sixty second film, and this is where client expectations are furthest from reality. A usable four second shot commonly takes many attempts, because the model must be steered toward the specific thing the board specified rather than the generically attractive thing it offers first. Nour (2026) found that prompt refinement and model selection are distinct levers with different effects, which in practice means part of this time is spent determining which approach suits a given shot rather than simply repeating one.
Editing, sound, grade and graphics take five to seven days and do not compress meaningfully, because they follow a fixed order. The offline edit establishes structure, picture is locked, and only then are sound, music, colour and titles applied to a timeline that will not move. A client who requests colour work before picture lock is requesting work that will be discarded. This stage also absorbs the revision rounds, which is why the number of rounds in the quotation is a schedule item and not only a cost item.
Review time is the variable that clients control entirely and underestimate consistently. Two consolidated review rounds with a two day turnaround each adds four days. The same two rounds with a two week internal circulation adds four weeks, and the project doubles in length without a single additional hour of production work. The most effective way for a client to shorten a project is not to ask the studio to work faster but to name one approver and give them a deadline.
Some stages genuinely do compress and it is worth knowing which. The number of distinct environments can be reduced, which cuts look development and generation substantially. The number of deliverable formats can be reduced. Revision rounds can be reduced if the client accepts the consequence. What does not compress is the edit and finishing sequence, the render and export time, and the number of attempts a difficult shot requires.
Against a conventional production the honest comparison is that AI removes the coordination overhead, which is where most of a traditional schedule is spent waiting for availability, permits, casting and weather. That saving is typically three to four weeks on a comparable brief. It does not remove the thinking, the approving or the finishing, and a client who plans as though it does will be disappointed by a process that is, in fact, considerably faster than the alternative.
