Location and Environment Design Without a Location Scout

How to design a believable environment when you cannot visit one, what makes a constructed place feel real, and where this approach reaches its limit.

Location is one of the largest costs in conventional production and one of the largest constraints on what a film can show. Access, permits, travel, weather, availability and the sheer difficulty of finding a place that matches the brief all shape what gets made. Constructed environments remove most of that, and the quality of the result depends on whether the place has been designed or merely described.

A described environment produces a generic one. Asking for a modern office, a factory floor or a luxury apartment returns the statistical average of those things, which is why so much generated material looks familiar in an uncomfortable way. A designed environment specifies what makes this particular place specific: the era of the building, the materials, the state of maintenance, the light source and its direction, the evidence of the people who use it.

Evidence of use is the single most effective realism cue and the one most often missing. Real places carry traces: wear on a floor where people walk, a chair pushed back, cables that were run later, a notice on a wall, marks where something was moved. Perfectly tidy environments read as showrooms. Specifying a small number of these details deliberately, rather than hoping the model supplies them, is what makes a constructed place feel inhabited.

Light is what establishes the location more than the architecture does. A single strong source from a high window reads as an industrial building. Even overhead fluorescent reads as an office. Low warm sources read as domestic evening. Specifying the source, its direction, its quality and its colour temperature does more to place a scene than describing the room's contents, and it is also what allows several shots in the same environment to belong together.

Consistency across a sequence is the technical challenge, because a model has no memory of the environment it produced an hour ago. Establishing a reference frame of the location early, then conditioning subsequent shots from it, holds the space together far more effectively than describing it repeatedly. Without that, a film set in one office will visit several similar offices, which audiences perceive as disorientation even when they cannot identify the cause.

The limits of the approach are worth stating plainly, because this is where the method is most often misused. A constructed environment cannot stand in for a company's actual premises, a real factory, a specific city that must be identifiably itself, or any location that functions as evidence. Kirk and Givi (2025) found that perceptions of AI authorship shape consumer responses to marketing communications and can produce negative reactions in some conditions, and a constructed depiction of a real workplace is precisely the case where an audience feels misled if it emerges.

Where the approach is strongest is in environments that are generic by intention: a nondescript boardroom for a scenario, an abstract or stylised space, a future state that does not exist, a location that would require travel for four seconds of screen time, or an environment being used as a mood rather than a place. In those cases the constructed version is not a substitute for a real location, it is the correct choice.

For property and architectural work the situation is different again, because the environment is the product. There the model must be built from the actual drawings rather than generated, since dimensions, sightlines and finishes are commitments. Generated material has a supporting role in landscaping, sky, distant context and atmosphere, and no role in the spaces being sold. Poushneh (2021) found that perceived proximity to a virtual product influenced purchase intention, which is exactly why the proximity must be to the real design.

The practical workflow mirrors the stills first approach used elsewhere. Design the environment as one or two approved frames, establishing the light, the materials, the palette and the level of wear. Get those signed off. Then produce the shots of the film within that established world, conditioning from the approved frames rather than describing the place again. This is faster and it removes the most common revision, which is a client discovering that the location in the film is not the one they had imagined.

The cost comparison that matters is not against a location fee but against the whole logistics chain: the recce, the permits, the travel, the crew day, the weather risk and the availability window. Jonauskaite et al. (2020) documented consistent patterns of emotion associations with colours, which is a reminder that a constructed environment also gives a level of control over palette and mood that a real location rarely offers. For the right shots, that control is the point rather than a consolation.
