Topic Clusters and Internal Linking for Content Sites

How to structure a content library so the whole set ranks better than its parts, and what internal links actually do.

A content library that is a flat list of unrelated posts performs worse than the same number of posts organised into clusters, and the difference is not marginal. Structure is what converts a collection into evidence of expertise, both for a search system reading the site and for a person deciding whether the company understands their problem.

A topic cluster has a simple shape. One substantial page covers a broad subject at a level that answers the general question. Around it sit a number of narrower pages, each covering one specific aspect in genuine depth. The broad page links to each of the narrow ones, and each narrow page links back to the broad one and across to its closest siblings. That is the entire mechanism.

What the structure communicates is coverage. A single page about video production pricing competes against thousands of similar pages. A pricing page supported by eight specific pages on quotation structure, day rates, usage rights, revision terms, hidden costs, budget tiers, rush fees and concept fees demonstrates that the site has actually engaged with the subject rather than written about it once.

Mladenović et al. (2023), examining determinants of online search visibility, found that visibility depends on the combination of on page factors and content relevance rather than on any single lever. Clustering is how relevance is demonstrated at scale: the site is not asserting expertise in a heading, it is exhibiting it across a set of pages that reference one another sensibly.

Internal links do two distinct jobs and it helps to separate them. They pass authority between pages, so a strong page lends weight to the pages it links to. And they route readers, so a visitor who arrives at a narrow page can find the broader context or the adjacent question. The second job is the one that affects conversion, and it is the one most sites neglect by placing links only in a sidebar.

Links work best in the body of the text where they are contextual, using descriptive anchor text that names the destination's subject. A link reading how quotations are structured tells both the reader and the system what sits at the other end. A link reading click here or read more tells neither, and it is the most common wasted signal on content sites.

The cluster should be defined by the buyer's questions rather than by the company's structure. Nobody browses by department. The clusters that work map to decisions a buyer makes: what does this cost, how does the process work, what format do I need, what applies to my industry, what happens in my market. Writing the question list first exposes the gaps, which is usually more valuable than the structure itself.

Cannibalisation is the failure this structure prevents. When several pages target the same phrase, they compete with each other and none of them wins outright. A cluster avoids this by giving each page a distinct primary question, with the broad page holding the general term and the narrow pages holding the specific long tail variants. Deciding the primary question per page, and writing it down, is what keeps a growing library from competing with itself.

Ekström et al. (2024) demonstrated that the way a user phrases a query materially changes the results they see, which is the reason the narrow pages matter more than they appear. Buyers ask specific questions in specific words, and a broad page cannot match every phrasing. The cluster exists so that whatever phrasing a buyer uses, some page in the set is the closest available answer.

The practical build order is to start with the narrow pages rather than the pillar. Specific pages are easier to write well, they answer real questions immediately, and they can be published as they are finished. Once several exist, the broad page is written to connect them, which is easier than writing a general page first and then trying to find eight specific things to say beneath it. Adding the links in both directions as each page is published keeps the structure from becoming a retrofitting project.
