Turning a Corporate Deck Into a Watchable Film
Why a presentation does not become a film by being narrated, what has to be discarded, and how to keep the substance while changing the form.
A frequent brief is to turn an existing corporate presentation into a video, and the default execution is to animate the slides and add a voiceover. The result is a document being read aloud, which is neither a good presentation nor a good film. The two forms have different mechanics and converting between them requires discarding most of the original structure.
The fundamental difference is control of pace. A reader of a deck controls their own progression: they can linger on a dense slide, skip a section, return to a figure. A viewer cannot. Every piece of information arrives at a speed the film chooses, which means content that works as a reference document becomes unfollowable as a linear sequence.
The cognitive constraint is well documented. Beege and Ploetzner (2025), studying learning from interactive video, examined how navigation and cognitive load influence what viewers take from video material, and Ludwig et al. (2026) found that instructional design and cognitive load affect knowledge acquisition and problem solving. A slide with six bullet points, three figures and a chart exceeds what a viewer can process when it arrives for eight seconds and then leaves.
The second difference is that a deck is usually organised for completeness while a film has to be organised for persuasion. A presentation covers the company, the market, the product, the team, the roadmap and the financials because a reader may need any of them. A film has to choose one argument and support it, discarding everything that does not serve it. This is the hardest part of the conversion and the part clients resist.
The practical method is to identify the single claim the film is making, then take from the deck only what supports it. A twenty slide deck typically yields three or four genuinely necessary points. The rest is not lost; it remains in the deck, which continues to exist for the situations it was made for. Treating the film as a replacement for the document rather than a companion to it is what produces bloated, unwatchable results.
Numbers require complete reconstruction rather than transfer. A chart designed for a page has axes, labels, a legend and several series, all legible because the reader can study it. On screen it needs to become one idea: the single comparison that matters, built progressively, held long enough to absorb, with the surrounding detail removed. Three well constructed data moments communicate more than a deck's worth of charts animated in sequence.
The narration should not read the slide, which is the most common failure. Text on screen and words in the ear compete for the same processing when they duplicate each other. The workable division is that on screen text carries the label or the figure, and the narration carries the meaning, the implication or the reason. Neither repeats the other.
Visual material has to be found or built, because a deck's imagery is usually stock or diagrammatic and will not sustain a film. This is where the production method decision belongs: real operations and real people should be filmed, product and mechanism built accurately, and environments and abstract sequences generated. A film assembled entirely from animated slide elements looks like what it is.
The register should be decided rather than inherited. Decks are written in institutional language, and narrating that language produces a film that sounds like a document. Rewriting for speech, shorter sentences, one idea each, active voice, concrete nouns, is a rewrite rather than an edit. Peng et al. (2025) found that vocal cues shape dynamic credibility judgements, and a performer reading corporate prose cannot rescue it.
The useful test before production is to write the film's argument in three sentences without referring to the deck. If that can be done, the film has a shape and the deck is a source of evidence for it. If it cannot, the brief is to make a video of a presentation rather than a film, and the honest recommendation is usually a well recorded presentation with good graphics rather than an expensive production that will not be watched either.
