When an Aerial Shot Earns Its Cost and When It Does Not
What aerial footage genuinely communicates, the shots that are decorative, and how to decide before booking the flight.
Aerial footage is requested more often than it is justified. It appears in briefs as a default, it is expensive once permits, weather windows and an operator are accounted for, and a large proportion of the resulting shots communicate nothing that a ground camera could not have done more cheaply. Deciding before booking, rather than after, is worth real money.
The shots that earn their cost share one property: they show a relationship that cannot be seen from the ground. The extent of a facility. How a development sits within its surroundings. The distance between two things. The scale of an operation. A route, a coastline, a site boundary. In each case the aerial position is carrying information rather than atmosphere.
The shots that do not earn their cost are equally recognisable. A slow rise over a building that reveals nothing new. An orbit around a subject already established. A push toward a doorway. A drifting establishing shot of a city that appears in every corporate video ever made. These read as production value rather than as content, and audiences have seen enough of them to discount them.
For industrial and infrastructure clients the aerial frequently is the argument rather than the decoration. Progress documentation across a construction programme, the layout of a plant, the relationship between phases of a development. Han et al. (2021), examining change detection in unmanned aerial vehicle images for progress monitoring of road construction, and Pasternak et al. (2024), using unmanned aerial vehicle photogrammetry to monitor geometric changes at reclaimed landfills, both illustrate that aerial capture is used as a measurement instrument in these sectors rather than only as imagery.
That distinction is commercially useful when quoting. A client who wants a beautiful opening shot is buying atmosphere and should be told the cost honestly. A client who needs to show a stakeholder how a site has changed over eight months is buying evidence, and the aerial is the cheapest way to produce it.
The cost structure is not obvious to clients and should be explained. The flight itself is a small part. The larger components are the approvals with their lead times, the operator's authorisation and insurance, the weather contingency, and the fact that an aerial day is largely spent waiting for the right light and the right wind. A single shot has close to the same overhead as a full day of aerial work, which is why aerials should be batched.
Weather is the scheduling risk that clients underestimate most. Wind grounds drones more often than rain does, approvals are tied to specific dates, and a cancellation may require reapplication rather than a simple reschedule. Requesting a permitted window rather than a single day, where the process allows it, converts a lost approval into an inconvenience.
There is a legitimate alternative when the aerial is contextual rather than evidential. For establishing shots, scale and surrounding context, particularly for developments that do not exist yet, built or generated aerial perspectives can carry the same information without the flight. Poushneh (2021) found that perceived proximity to a virtual product influenced purchase intention, which supports constructed aerial context where the purpose is to convey setting rather than to document a specific real moment.
The boundary on that substitution is the same one that governs all constructed imagery: it works where the audience understands the image as illustrative, and it creates a problem where the shot functions as proof that a facility, a development or an operation exists at a stated scale. For progress documentation and site evidence, only a real flight will do.
The practical test to apply to every aerial in a shot list is a single question: what does the audience learn from this altitude that they could not learn from the ground. If the answer is a relationship, a scale or an extent, book the flight. If the answer is that it looks impressive, the budget is almost always better spent on the sound mix.
